An album so good I had to buy a second CD as I wore the first one out. At least that's what I attribute it to, the first one ended up sounding soooo quiet after years of playing. I remember blasting this out whilst I was ostensibly revising for GCSE Physics, sat in the sun in the garden, singing along, blissfully having no clue what "chasing the dragon" was.
I remember this band and this album causing a real frisson at school, the first that did that among my peer group, just four or five of us. It was a real zeitgeist moment, something exotic, dangerous and ours. Those images in the OP don't half bring back some memories. Then being blown away by the b-sides: the discordant breakdown of He's Dead then the final resolve of Butler's riff right at the end; the fuzz and buzz of Where The Pigs Don't Fly; the opening notes of My Insatiable One.
I remember seeing them live three or four times, my first proper gig. I remember the Brits performance, Brett spitting and sneering out the lyrics to Animal Nitrate, Bernard tearing out the solo. I remember the "best new band in Britain" acclaim.
I remember being sucked in by the androgyny and happily causing outrage by wearing the album art t-shirt. If I can bury the nostalgia and all that's gone, still an absolutely amazing listen, fresh, vital and epoch defining. Group of One , May 16, For me, I was aware of Suede but for some reason avoided not purposely listening to them until This is even stranger since I was already a huge Blur and Radiohead fan. It wasn't until I was in London on vacation in that Head Music came out.
I went backwards and bought the first three albums and wow, was I blown away, especially by the debut and Dog Man Star. Bernard Butler was a name I'd heard for ages as one of the great new guitarists of the s but I literally couldn't believe what I was hearing when I first listened to the debut. It changed my life However, I now rank "Pantomime Horse" and "She's Not Dead" up there with Suede's best, and "Breakdown," "The Next Life," and "Sleeping Pills" are just fantastic slices of kitchen-sink drama where Brett perfectly captures, in his own words, "the plight of the average housewife.
I mean, "My Insatiable One" is stunning and it's hard to find better guitar playing than on "He's Dead. But BernardSuede - S/T - Cd Review. the ethereally beautiful 'Next Life' one of the most touching songs ever created. There are many such ballads all over this album, marking Suede's trademark theatrical beauty from the start, particularly with the double barrel of Sleeping Pills and Breakdown, although their beauty is best captured on the dark /5(82).
