The sound quality is fairly average but the music is first-rate especially Otis Spann's piano Muddy's guitar is not always audible.
These tapes have often been wrongly credited solely to Muddy Waters. They definitely have a strong historical significance since they document the first bluesmen travels in Europe, a practice that will spread thereafter.
Otis Spann is one of the artists they recorded. Here we hear two spoken tracks and two superb blues : "Poor country boy" and "People calls me lucky". His eloquence, inspiration, creativity are at their zenith on tracks like "The hard way" or the beautiful "Otis in the dark".
The rhythmic support and delicate interventions of Robert Lockwood Jr are excellent and their common feeling is complete. The two men share the vocal parts, but it is indeed an Otis Spann disc. A truly remarkable album with an intimate atmosphere and full of a feeling rarely achieved in a piano blues record. Many sensational tracks punctuate this album : "Country boy", "Take a little walk with me", "Beat-up team", "My daily wish", "Great northern stomp". The thirty tracks cut during this session of august possess an outstanding sound quality and is disseminated on a handful of discs.
This is one of the discs compiling songs recorded for Candid in august under the supervision of Nat Hentoff. Otis is always associated with guitarist Robert Lockwood Jr with the same great result as before. Oden, worse singer than Spann and Lockwood, performs on four tracks in this session which, therefore, seem less effective. However, there are many excellent moments : "It must have been the devil", "Otis blues", "Half ain't been told", "This is the blues", "My home is in the Delta".
Otis is accompanied by the jazzy guitar of Robert Lockwood Jr. A beautiful complement to "Otis Spann is the blues" or "Walkin' the blues" in which several notable tracks can be heard : "Baby child", "Woman leave me alone" and some instrumentals "Otis rides again", "Don't give up the ship", "3 minutes boogie".
This LP collects a handful of rarities and some unreleased tracks from the fantastic Candid august and Decca may sessions. Among unissued material, we find beautiful versions of "I'd rather be the devil" and "Nobody knows". Murphy had a small stroke during a performance around and a more severe one a year or so later. He underwent extensive physical therapy and retired, but he resumed performing at the Chicago Blues Festival with Cotton. Smith pursued a lifelong interest in the blues and over time amassed an enviable collection of rare 78s. These would later form the backbone of his highly regarded BBC radio broadcasts between and , in which he examined various aspects of blues and gospel music. The records also formed his groundbreaking twenty-one volume piano blues series on the Magpie label.
