War Child was Jethro Tull's first album after two chart-toppers, Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play, and was one of those records that was a hit the day it was announced it was certified platinum based on pre-orders, the last Tull album to earn platinum record status.

It never made the impression of its predecessors, however, as it was a return to standard-length songs following two epic-length pieces.

Retrieved 1 May But you're wrong, Steve. First, it is a specific critic that the entertainer is signalling out, even though all critics were lumped together earlier.

However, "Steve" is a fairly common name, so possibly instead of noting a single critic, the entertainer is applying it to several, who just will not be able to figure out who he is applying it to. Second, the overlapping shows that it is not a single aspect of which the critic is wrong, but is wrong on several points and several levels, all intertwined.

You see, it's only solitaire. The game is not a great mental struggle against another. The game is a trivial pastime that one plays against, at most, oneself. The game of solitaire does not include an audience watching it, like other competitions do. The entire act of the entertainer is for the entertainer, no matter who is looking on.

That feeling faded over the years and it became every bit as essential as all the others. I will add that the new edition has taken it to a whole other level.

I love it. And the bonus material is great, with the book putting everything into context. What a band! DaveJ , Apr 21, War Child is not one of Tulls best by any stretch.

  6. General CommentI have a feeling that, like most Tull songs, this one may just be just too psychedelic and "stream-of-consciousness" for the kind of very precise, systematic interpretation that others have attempted, but I have a hunch that it is having a jab at critics (specifically, theatre critics in the first part) and (in the second)indulging in a bit of self-directed send-up: Ian Anderson.
  7. Much of the music was written during the latter half of the “Passion Play” tour. Yet, “War Child” is arguably pre-Passion Play. “Skating Away,” “Bungle in the Jungle,” and “Only Solitaire” came from the aborted “Chateau D’isaster” tapes preceding “A Passion Play” and “Two Fingers” was a rewrite of a song left off “Aqualung.”.
