Eyesight to the Blind This is a very original, dramatic treatment of a blues song, quite challenging in its way. Pete presumably knew the song already.
Either way it seems an obvious move to cover it on the album. When they re arranged the song for the film and later tour , it became a very different blues-rock arrangement, so I was surprised to hear this hard, deliberately unforgiving rendition.
In contrast to the original, the playfulness and humour of the lyric is disregarded here - it's just brutal statement, barked out by Daltrey is at his harshest the first time on the album we hear him using his full rock voice. I guess this fits the re-purposing of the song. Perhaps the film confused me.
It makes for a dramatic end to side one of the vinyl which I do not own, thanks for asking but I wonder if there was a bit of track shuffling for pressing purposes. Still, it makes for a sharp wake up call after the heavy aural trip of Sparks. It also stops virtually dead, feeling oddly unresolved, which sort of demands that you immediately flip the record to find out what happens next.
