Spanning a Lifetime One thing I love about the way he played the blues piano is the way he lives on the bottom end. Listen to his solo on the great ending instrumental, Spann's Blues.
He starts low on the keyboard, never lets the sound get murky and plays a solo that sounds like no other I have ever heard. This man is elemental American soul and he should be along with Muddy, of course better known. Heck, we should teaching his music along with Ives, Hank Williams, Robert Johnson, Mingus and so many others in high schools.
But really, there aren't any off numbers on this CD- these guys are way too professional for that. One last thing- this was recorded with an audience in the studio.
You can hear clapping between the songs and you hear them yell out requests e. It sounds as if everybody was having a great time. I have been listening to this disc for almost thirty-five years now. I always have a great time doing so. What more can I tell you? Musically this is wonderful. A party like audience in the studio and Otis Spann singing and playing at the top of his game with the Muddy Waters band backing him.
But they did not record George 'Harmonica' Smith playing his harp through an amp and one could only imagine how muuch more bite the music would have had if they had. I have had this since it first came out on record and other than the flaw it is real good. This is a wonderful album showing Otis at his best. Do yourself a favour and buy it! My little stock of words don't allow express all my feelings about this music.
May be only simple adjectives - fantastic and outstanding I hope to get other Spann's albums. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Translate all reviews to English. Sounds as if there couldn't be much wrong with that, and there isn't.
The band are perfect, with never a note too many but always there. Tempos are just as they should be, nothing hurried, nothing slack. A firm supportive beat is laid down by Mac Arnold and Francis Clay. The guitars take the odd solo, as does George Smith on harmonica, but most of the time concentrate on fill ins and backing to the piano. The band was probably the best in the blues world at the time, and it shows absolute mastery in every note played. All this is probably down to Muddy, not just as a guitarist but as a leader, who proves here yet again that for twenty years he really was 'King of the Chicago Blues'.View credits, reviews, tracks and shop for the Vinyl release of Otis Spann Is The Blues on Discogs.
