This snippet of live tape gives us more of a sense of what English punk, at its birth, was really about — the ideal of an underground community, an antistar rebellion — than many pages of analysis could. Their debut is a bitter, relentlessly uningratiating work — not a record so much as an antirecord. The title track, however, is everything one could hope for: a powerful, albeit self-serving, denunciation of all who opposed the Sex Pistols which, as far as Lydon is concerned, means just about everybody.

The beat is intentionally slow and jerky.

“Anarchy in the U.K.” was released as the band’s debut single on 26 November and was later featured on their album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols.
